When is Daylight Saving 2025? This App Keeps You Time and Weather Alert

While there has been talk of making daylight saving time permanent, there is no legislation yet. Find out when we'll all be setting our clocks forward once again. Plus, check out this free app to stay time and weather alert.

A brief history of daylight saving time

In 1918, the United States first implemented daylight saving time (DST) as a wartime measure. It is a misconception that daylight saving time was created for the benefit of farmers.

Today, the US Department of Transportation (DOT) oversees daylight saving time. DOT cites the reduction of energy and crime for continuing to observe DST.

Twice annually, Americans move their clocks either one hour forward or back. In spring, time "springs forward," and in fall, it "falls back." The exact dates on which this occurs can vary.

For example, the US Uniform Time Act of 1966 formalized daylight saving time observation lasting six months. However, a 2005 extension was motivated, in part, by lobbyists from the candy industry seeking to increase profits by extending daylight saving time to include Halloween.

How Americans feel about daylight saving time

In the United States, several surveys conducted between 2021 and 2022 found a divide on the matter. One group of surveys found that most Americans would prefer permanent Daylight Saving Time. However, another group of surveys found that more Americans would prefer permanent Standard Time. Either way, the main takeaway is that it seems most Americans would prefer not to have to move their clocks one way or the other twice per year.

Daylight saving time: When do clocks "spring ahead" in 2025?

In 2025, daylight saving time will occur on Sunday, March 9, and Americans in most states will move their clocks forward by one hour.

However, two US states – Hawaii and Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) – do not observe daylight saving time.

Additionally, in the northern hemisphere, the spring (or vernal) equinox occurs on March 20, marking the first day of spring.
