Dangerous "historic" severe storms and flooding this week
This week, a powerful, wide-reaching spring storm will blast across the US and forecasters are warning people to be prepared and stay informed at all times.
A life-threatening outbreak of long-lasting and strong tornadoes and historic levels of days-long flooding are expected to begin early Wednesday, along with severe thunderstorms, continuing through the week.
Tornado outbreak
The Storm Prediction Center of the National Weather Service (NWS) shows the possibility of severe weather stretching from Texas to Pennsylvania over the next three days. Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Ohio have risk levels between 4-5.
Generational levels of flooding possible
Forecasters from the NWS are warning that many rounds of heavy, torrential rain are possible throughout the week.
"Extensive, rare, and at times catastrophic, flash flooding is likely… flash flood water levels may reach areas that rarely or have never flooded before," the NWS said. "This isn’t routine. This is a rare, high-impact, and potentially devastating event."
NWS forecasters used terms such as "generational rainfall amounts" and "catastrophic flooding" to warn the public that weather will bring multiple "particularly dangerous" flood watches throughout the week.
Some areas have been given a rare level 4 of 4 high-risk flooding rainfall. Within four days, some areas could see an entire spring's worth of rain and the hardest-hit locations.
