Scientists Move Doomsday Clock One Second Forward
Due to climate change and other factors, scientists have moved the Doomsday Clock one second closer to catastrophe. Weather matters. What can you do to stay safe and prepared? This free weather app can help.
Scientists Move Doomsday Clock One Second Closer to Catastrophe
The "Doomsday Clock" has been set at 90 seconds to midnight for the past two years, but for 2025, scientists have moved the second hand one tick forward to 89 seconds – the nearest to catastrophe ever.
Since 1947, throughout its history, the doomsday clock has moved forward and back, depending on circumstances. At its inception in 1947, the clock was set at 11:53 or seven minutes to midnight. It has moved forward 18 times, and backward 8 times. The farthest away from midnight was 17 minutes in 1991.
2025: Doomsday Clock at its Shortest Distance to Midnight Ever
However, in 2025, due to the threats from climate change and other factors, the doomsday clock has set a new record for the shortest time span away from midnight, at only 89 seconds.
Specifically for 2025, scientists moved the Doomsday Clock forward mainly due to the climate crisis, the potential of a nuclear arms race, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza, according to CNN.
What Does the Doomsday Clock Represent?
While the Doomsday Clock originally was focused on the nuclear threat, later, the scientists also took into consideration numerous other factors threatening humanity, including climate change, war, weapons, bioterrorism, energy, politics, diplomacy, and, more recently, artificial intelligence.
The Doomsday Clock serves as a metaphor, rather than a prediction, of threats to humanity, with the clock estimating the likelihood of a human-made catastrophe.
The Origin of the "Doomsday Clock"
In 1947, the members of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists established the "Doomsday Clock" to reflect the level of danger in which humankind lives in the nuclear age. This international group of researchers was originally called the Chicago Atomic Scientists and was made up of those who had participated in the Manhattan Project.
After the US bombed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, these scientists began publishing a mimeographed newsletter and then the magazine Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. The publication featured the hands of the clock on every cover.
